E-Commerce Context:

According to the DataRePortal as of 2021 there are 5 Million internet users in Zimbabwe with about a 4% increase from prior year, and an internet penetration at relatively low 33%. Social Media usage on the other hand has seen a decrease in the years between  2019 and 2020 due to government crackdown on Social Media, and then regained a 33% increase from 2020 to 2021 to reach 1.3 Million users. Albeit the socio-economic difficulties, the overall macro e-commerce statistics for Zimbabwe are very similar to those of Rwanda, and holds grounds for great progress in the near future.

Country Performance

Zimbabwe has lost positions on almost all indexes except for the OECD trade facilitation where it has gained 0.7 points and holds a significantly high score for this index. This progress is due to the recent ratification of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement in 2018 which stands today at 62.2% implementation level with the deadline to complete the implementation being for December 2029. Following the WTO agreement Zimbabwe has benefited from multiple international assistance programs such as the assistance from UNCTAD to establish a trade facilitation roadmap in Zimbabwe.
